Root Canal Treatment

At Ivy House Dental Practice, we provide expert root canal treatment to save damaged or infected teeth and restore your oral health. Root canal treatment is a highly effective way to address infections deep within the tooth, relieving pain and preventing the need for extraction. With our skilled team and modern techniques, we ensure your treatment is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure designed to treat the inside of a tooth when it becomes infected or damaged. The root canal is the part of the tooth that contains the pulp—nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If the pulp becomes infected due to decay, injury, or a cracked tooth, it can lead to severe pain, sensitivity, and even an abscess.

Root canal treatment involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection. This procedure allows us to save the tooth, which would otherwise need to be extracted.

When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

Root canal treatment is often necessary when the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or damaged. Common symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal include:

Persistent tooth pain or sensitivity

Swelling and tenderness around the tooth

Discolouration of the tooth

Pain when chewing or biting

An abscess or pimple on the gums

If left untreated, an infected tooth can worsen, leading to more severe pain and potentially spreading the infection to other parts of the mouth or body. Root canal treatment addresses the problem at its source, eliminating the infection and preserving your natural tooth.

Does Root Canal Treatment Hurt?

Despite its reputation, root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. With modern anaesthetics and techniques, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure. After the treatment, you may experience some mild soreness, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief and subsides within a few days.

How Long Does a Root Canal Last?

A root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime with proper care. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular dental check-ups to ensure the long-term success of your treatment. If a crown is placed, it will provide added strength and protection for the tooth, helping to preserve it for many years to come.
